With the end of Halloween comes a brief period where everyone can relax and look forward to enjoying Thanksgiving with their family. Just kidding.

It seems like the minute that Halloween is over people in my neighborhood are already setting up Christmas lights, and I always am finding myself asking the same questions. Why are you setting up Christmas lights? Why are you not setting up Thanksgiving decorations? Where is your giant inflatable turkey?

Sorry, but it is just absolutely unbearable to see Christmas decorations the day after Halloween. It makes no sense — setting up the nativity scene when your kids are hauling skeletons and spiderwebs into your garage.

Even though I feel this way, some people actually enjoy seeing the decorations early.

“It depends,” receptionist Katy Reznicek said. “My dad’s aunt would invite us all over for Thanksgiving, and she would have decorations up, and I would enjoy it. But whenever I go into the store and they have decorations, I don’t like it. I guess that sometimes it doesn’t feel like Thanksgiving without the decorations.”

I can agree that sometimes seeing the decorations early can make you feel a little more festive, but still, I don’t see any reason for someone to decorate this early.

While the most obvious example of aggravatingly early Christmas cheer is yard decorations and Christmas lights being set up, people also do little things that should not be done before Christmas time.

One of the minor things you might notice when walking into your early decorator of a neighbor’s house is that they will have some Christmas music playing lightly in the background. Listening to “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” I can sort of tolerate, but it is not okay to be blasting “Jingle Bell Rock” all the time.

With Christmas music, you will be hearing the same songs over and over again until the end of the season.

“I hate Christmas music this early because it is too distracting. It drives me insane!”  Spanish Teacher Colin Koehler said.

Being excited for Christmas is alright, but not  seven weeks in advance.

Besides, with thanksgiving, you have a whole day of fun to look forward to. Full of awkward family discussions and arguing on how to best bring up your kids — cough parents cough.

After all, Thanksgiving is a day to enjoy with your family and thank the big man upstairs for all you have.

Without question, decorating for Christmas too early is one of the worst holiday crimes someone can commit. Remember, the best way to spread Christmas cheer, is by singing loud for all to hear. Just make sure to give Thanksgiving a little breathing room first. After all, few people enjoy seeing Santa and his reindeer dashing through the autumn leaves.
