The soccer team started the year strong with a 3-1 record. Three of four teams that Mount Michael played — Schuyler, Skutt, and Gross — finished in the top five of the class B rankings last year.
The Knights started the year off against Seward on March 19. Even though the team had the majority of their practices inside due to the rain, they won 7-1.
“The team had great chemistry from playing together throughout the winter inside, and we have had productive practices when we have played outside,” outside midfielder Carson Leahy ‘19 said.
Leahy led the team with two goals and showed leadership as captain during the game.
“My role as captain has made me step up for the team, and I have been working hard on my shooting and finishing,” he said.
The team followed the Seward game up with a game against Schuyler on March 21. They won 4-0 with a goal by striker Joe Chouinard ‘21.
“They moved me to striker, and I just played right on the offsides line. I used my speed without the ball to run past the defenders and score,” he said.
This was a huge win for the Mount Michael soccer program.
“We had not beaten them in the past couple of years, so it felt great. Last year, we only scored one goal against them, so to beat them 4-0 felt especially good,” Chouinard said.
The Knights then took their first loss of the season against Skutt on March 26.
While tough, the team respected the win.
“They played a more organized offense that was much faster in the middle. They also played better as a team than us,” Jacob Benes’ 19 said.
Though this put a damper in the team’s mood, they learned from the loss.
“We learned that we’re good enough to play with any team out there, but we can’t let down at any point in the game,” Benes said.
The team played their fourth game of the season against Gross on March 28. They won 2-0. Sophomores Chouinard and Caleb Vincentini ‘21 both scored against the cougars.
“The team is very optimistic and is feeling better than ever about the upcoming games. We are all happy with our progress so far,” Vincentini said.
