Golf has been a big part of Luke Gutschewski’s ‘21 life since he was a toddler. Because golf runs big in his family, there really was no escaping it. Escaping golf, however, was the last thing Gutschewski wanted.
“I’ve been playing golf pretty much my whole life. I’ve had a club in my hand for as long as I can remember. I played in my first tournament when I was seven, and my dad even caddied for me,” Gutschewski said.
As high school neared, Gutschewski had a tough decision to make: Where should he attend school?
“Creighton Prep had been an option for a long time. I wanted to go there until I came and shadowed at Mount Michael,” he said. “There was something about the environment and the students; it was more welcoming. Although Prep and Skutt usually have better teams, I wanted my high school experience to be a memorable one. Many of my friends were already going [to Mount Michael], so the decision was easy.”
Having made his decision, Gutschewski entered his first high school golf season as a freshman Knight.
“My freshman season was a good one,” he said. “I was happy with how I played, and I was even happier I got to represent Mount Michael at all the tournaments. I ended up winning four out of the eight tournaments we were in. I became super close with my teammates, and I just loved my first season here.”
Gutschewski was happy with his second season as well.
“The whole team qualified for districts, which was a good confidence booster for state,” Gutschewski said. “And we all had to do our parts, but I think we did pretty well at state. I’ve seen a dramatic improvement in not only myself but in the team overall.”
Gutschewski has already won nine tournaments over the last two years of his high school career.
“I’m pretty glad with how I’ve played so far. I just got to keep working and improving. I can’t wait to see how much I improve by senior year,” he said.
