With 400 acres of land, faculty willing to moderate, and students eager to get outside and have fun, a disc golf club was bound to be started. What once began as a P.E. unit is now one of the most popular clubs at The Mount. The club has over 20 students actively participating mostly consisting of juniors and more on the way after the fall sports season concludes.
Club Co-Founders Easton Crouse ‘25 and Aidan Balas ‘25 knew a disc golf club belonged at Mount Michael after they had a successful summer of “frolfing” at local disc golf courses.
“With the campus being so massive, there couldn’t be a better place for a “frolf” course with a wide variety of hole lengths, ” Crouse said.
Of the 79 students who took The Mount’s October survey, 66% said they have already played disc golf. However there are still many more students who have yet to explore the new course on campus.
“I think that our course is really accessible for all students and is a great way to have some fun with friends while being outside. I’m always trying to get some of my friends to go out for a round after school and before study hall,” Jackson Teetor ‘25 said.
Thanks to Director of Events and faculty sponsor Mr. Seth Pierce along with “frolf” disc customizer and enthusiast Diran Missak, the disc golf club members were equipped with discs to help them get out of any lay that they find themselves in.
Unlike actual golf, disc golf is not an expensive sport. Getting started with “frolfing” doesn’t require hundreds of dollars. Instead, you could get by with a singular multi-purpose disc, which normaly costs around $10.
While some of the holes on the “back 9” of the course have dedicated disc golf baskets donated by Missak, students also enjoy playing the “front 9” which consists of much tougher terrain and longer holes.
The upside of the longer holes being there are much easier targets, trees. Both cources are exciting and are regularly used by the PE classes, the disc golf club, and anybody else who wants to play.
Because of disc golf being relatively easy to learn and the small skill curve, it is an activity that is perfect for everybody. It is a growing sport with six courses across Omaha, about 9,000 courses across the United States and 4 million players worldwide.
While the “frolf” club is still in its infancy at The Mount, students are encouraged to join the club. “Frisbee golf is a really fun experience, which everyone can do, and helps build up the community here at Mount Michael,” Balas said.
