The average school day for a Mount Michael boarding student is quite different from any other high school. Students learn to have excellent time management, social skills, and prepare for the years ahead. Mount Michael is one of the greatest college prep schools because it allows young men to learn how to live on their own in a controlled environment with like-minded men away from their parents.
The daily routine at Mount Michael is designed to push the students more than just academic excellence. It encourages personal growth by pushing students to adapt to a boarding environment. Unlike typical high schools where students return home at the end of the day, some Mount Michael students live on campus, learning to balance personal freedom with responsibility. This unique experience instills a sense of discipline, as students must independently manage their time for studying, extracurriculars, and social interactions.
Although they independently manage their time, there are guidelines like designated study hours, prayer, and lights out. Students have the freedom to get up whenever they would like they just have to be in their first hour classroom by 7:55. Breakfast is served from 6:45am to 7:30am. The students have school from 7:55am – 3:24pm with 9 classes a day. One class that is different from most high schools is a required theology class that the students must have for all 4 years. This class helps the students learn the Benedictine values and grow their understanding of the Church. Most students have sports or extracurricular activities after school which go until 5:30. Boarders then have dinner anytime between 5:30pm – 6:30pm. The students have free time till 7. They have study hall from 7-8:30 where phones must be given to the floor’s dean so it ensures focus of the students while study hours and the doors to their rooms must be open. These hours the boys learn to use their time efficiently so they can enjoy their time after. From 8:30-10pm the boys have free time where they can do more homework, lift in the gym, shoot hoops, walk the gullies, etc. At 10pm it must be quiet in the dorms. At 10:10pm phones must be turned into the floors dean and they will have community prayer. Lights out is at 10:45 so it ensures they get to bed at a respectable time for the new day ahead.
Mount Michael Benedictine School offers a unique education rooted in the Benedictine Tradition. Since the beginning, St. Benedict’s followers have practiced a communal life of Prayer and Work—Ora et Labora. This tradition lives on at Mount Michael Benedictine. Through worship and praise, the faculty, staff, and students give thanks for our God given talents and commit ourselves to scholarly work habits “that in all things God may be glorified.”
