Despite the lackadaisical name, the Sloth Bear is anything but lazy. These large, shaggy mammals are highly active, but not throughout the day. Sloth Bears are nocturnal creatures, meaning they are only out and about at nighttime. The sloth bear is considerably large, growing up to 5 to 6 feet, males weighing around 300 pounds, and females weighing around 200 pounds. Sloth Bears are generally solitary, meaning they live and thrive alone, starting at the ripe age of one month old. Sloth Bears are rather noisy animals, making grunting and snorting noises whenever they please. If a Sloth Bear is threatened, they stand on their hind legs and show their huge claws, scaring away anything that stands in their path. Although other bears such as a brown bear or black bear are omnivores, eating primarily berries and occasional meats, Sloth Bears are considered myrmecophagous, meaning they pretty much only eat berries and fruits such as mango, fig, ebony and other fruits, and the occasional flower. These interesting looking bears originate from the Indian subcontinent, inhabiting primarily India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and Nepal.
