With a new school year comes new classes. This year, one program has made a noticeable jump from last year. The choir has gone from nine members from the 2024-2025 school year to 30 members this year.
The choir is headed by Ms. Emily Nolan, who has worked tirelessly to develop the Mount Michael music program in just four years. Nolan said, “I am very excited for this year’s choir. We finally have enough people to fully blend voices and bring out the best representation of Mount Michael music. I am excited to be able to try out new things with this choir that I have not been able to try yet. I think this year’s choir has the potential to be the best one Mount Michael has seen yet.”
New art teacher Mr. Luke Ervin is helping out with choir by playing piano. “It is great when we can get a big group of guys together where we can sing. It is a very powerful experience,” Ervin said. “I love playing the piano and I’m glad I can still be involved in music because I was a music teacher at my previous school.”
Junior Connor Sall said choir is his favorite class and always brightens his mood when he gets into The Crypt to practice. “The highlight of choir class to me is all the friends that I have in this class. Singing with them makes singing much more enjoyable,” Sall said.
The group has many opportunities to show off their singing, including performing the national anthem at sporting events, attending a camp in Kearney, performing at their biannual concerts, and participating in competitions.
Sophomore Laeth Sykora, who also participated in choir last year, said this year’s choir is “amazing compared to last year” and that it is “already looking really good.” Sykora added it is,“much easier to sing with more people and takes off a lot of pressure from yourself.”
New member Patrick Barnes ’27 said, “The choir is looking to inspire the Mount Michael community by singing and doing something that is outside of most of the participants’ comfort zones. Choir is something I never thought I would be involved in, and I am glad I joined.”
