Last January, John Cook retired after 25 years as the head coach of the Nebraska women’s volleyball team. Following this announcement, Nebraska announced a familiar face, Dani Busboom Kelly (DBK), to take his place.
DBK grew up in Cortland, Nebraska, and played for the Cornhuskers from 2003 to 2006 and, in her senior year, helped the Nebraska volleyball team to becoming National Champions. After her time as a player, she joined the Nebraska coaching staff in 2012 and was an assistant coach for five seasons, before becoming the Louisville Head Coach in 2017, leading them to two National Championships.
Now she has landed the job as the Head Coach of the number one team in the nation. Nebraska volleyball started off the season with a tough challenge against the No. 3 Pittsburg Panthers and the No. 6 Stanford Cardinals. The Nebraska Cornhuskers beat the Panthers three sets to one, defeating the reigning National Player of the Year Olivia Babcock. Two days later, Nebraska swept the Cardinals, marking the first two wins for the new era of Cornhusker volleyball.
During Labor Day weekend, the Cornhuskers were tested by the No. 7 ranked Kentucky Wildcats.
During their match, the Wildcats took the first two sets and were looking to sweep Nebraska.
Under the guidance of DBK, the Cornhuskers were able to pull off the reverse sweep, taking the next three sets and winning in five. The Nebraska Cornhuskers have kept their undefeated record and maintain their No. 1 national ranking.
