Boarding is one of the many things that sets Mount Michael apart from every other high school in Nebraska. Boarding offers many unique opportunities and experiences that help boys grow into young men. While most students practice sports or socialize with their classmates in their free time, a small group spends it deepening their connection with God every Thursday night through Lectio Divina.
On Thursdays, Br. Jerome Kmiecik opens up the Abbey for students to come and pray as a community and to bring their intentions to the Lord. Lectio Divina is Latin for “divine reading” and consists of Scriptural reading, meditation, and prayer and is intended to promote community as well as deepen one’s understanding of God’s word.
Frequent Lectio participant Michael Fayad ‘27 describes Lectio as “a great way to bond with your brothers and grow in your faith in Christ through the scriptures.” Lectio usually consists of a scripture reading from the Gospels or from the Rule of St. Benedict. After the scripture passage is read three times, students take turns describing what stuck out to them in the passage and how it could help them live a better life. After everyone has spoken Br. Jerome leads the group in a prayer, typically the Our Father, and then blesses the group with holy water, thus ending Lectio for the night. Right after Lectio finished, students get to enjoy freshly baked goods and ice cream courtesy of Br. Jerome and the monks of Mount Michael.
