This past year, many following high school athletics in Nebraska will have heard of one of the greatest teams that the state has ever seen. Millard South, guided by Jett Thomalla, the fourth-ranked quarterback in the nation according to 247 Sports, finished with a commanding 12–1 record. Their only loss was a forfeit against Arbor View. The team steamrolled its competition, winning by an average of 44.3 points per game. Other notable contributors include Penn State commit Amarion Jackson, Brody Anderson, Illinois commit Nelson Wheeler, and Teagan Urban. After their run to win the state championship, Millard South once again hopes to dominate Class A.
To do so, they brought in four-star quarterback and Nebraska commit Trae Taylor to play for Millard South in his senior year. During his junior year at Carmel Catholic, he finished with 3,571 passing yards, around 400 yards short of the state record as well as 38 touchdowns and 12 rushing touchdowns. Millard South also brought in fellow Nebraska commit and three-star wide receiver Antayvious “Tay” Ellis. Ellis finished his junior year at Crowley with 808 receiving yards – more than any receiver at Millard South other than Amarion Jackson – and 9 touchdowns.
These new transfers will massively benefit the team; however, it is not a guarantee that they will return to the state championship. Most of Millard South’s roster were seniors, who will have to be replenished with – just as talented – players from their depth chart.
However, Millard South has had talent flowing through the school for years, with only one of the last five seasons finishing with fewer than nine wins. If the development of the younger talent goes as expected, the team has a high chance of winning its third straight state title and second under head coach Taylor Mendenhall. Even though Millard South has already won a state championship with a top-five quarterback in the country, they have the chance to do it again with another highly touted quarterback under center.
