This fall, the Mount Michael Theatre Department will be putting on the production of “An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe,” compiled by Robert Mason. For the past two years, Mount Michael has competed in the district One-Act competition, and this year’s performance will continue that tradition. Leading the production for the first time is music teacher Ms. Emily Nolan, who is anticipating building the school’s growing theatre program and encouraging more students to get involved in the arts.
“I am excited to be a part of another fine arts offering here at Mount Michael,” Nolan said. “Finding your own artistic expression is so important, so I am happy to help foster an environment for more students to try new artistic endeavors.”
For Nolan, the fall One-Act represents more than just another production; it’s a chance to expand creative opportunities for students and strengthen Mount Michael’s fine arts community. In addition to directing the play, Nolan also leads the band, the choir, and the Mock Trial team, making her one of the most involved faculty members on campus. Balancing these responsibilities is no easy task, and she admits that time management is one of the greatest challenges in putting on a successful show.
“Scheduling will always be a difficulty,” Nolan explained. “Between academic and athletic expectations on students and scheduling around other extracurriculars like Mock Trial and Investment Club, getting a balanced and fair rehearsal schedule will be a challenge.”
Despite the busy schedules, Nolan remains focused on creating a welcoming program for students interested in theatre. She believes that the performing arts offer something for everyone, whether on stage, behind the scenes, or in a creative support role. Her goal is to grow the department by giving students more chances to participate and take ownership of their work.
“To improve the theatre department, I am trying to bring in as many actors as possible, expanding roles and responsibilities of the crew, and trying to allow people to be creative,” she said. “We even have a student composer who is going to try to write music.” That student, freshman Jason Qian, hopes to compose original music for “An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe,” bringing another layer of creativity to the performance.
Although Nolan is new to directing, she is not taking on the role alone. “The main help has come from Mrs. [Melissa] Gathje and Mr. [Luke] Ervin,” she said. “My mother, a former theater major and theater lover, has also been a huge help!”
Nolan is a shining example of a staff member who goes out of her way to create opportunities for students at Mount Michael. Her commitment to the arts ensures that every student, whether on stage or off, has a chance to be part of something creative and meaningful. As the cast and crew prepare for “An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe,” Nolan’s leadership is helping set the stage for another successful production, and for a bright future for the theatre program.
“An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe” will be performed on Dec. 5 -7 in the Crypt. Shortly before, the group will compete in the district One-Act competition on Dec. 2, in Norfolk, NE.
