All I hear during the months leading up to every Nebraska football season is “the hype is real this year” or “10-2 season incoming.”
Ultimately, the Huskers end up with the same outcome every single year. And honestly, this is the definition of delusion.
The definition of delusion is “based on or having faulty judgement or perception.” The fact that Nebraska football fans have the same expectations every single year and receive the same disappointing outcome every single year is truly unbelievable.
Now, I do understand where the older generation gets it from, because Nebraska used to be different at football. In the 90s, the Huskers were a consistent contender for a national championship and were back-to-back champions in 1994 and 1995 and followed it up with another in 1997.
When it comes to the younger generation, the delusion really does not add up because Nebraska has been either subpar or terrible at football for the past 20 years. Also, with the college football playoffs being expanded from four to twelve teams, it really just adds to the sense of delusion.
Coming into the 2025-26 season, the fallacy was through the roof. Nebraska fans were saying a playoff appearance was almost guaranteed with the strength of the schedule the Huskers have. The only true tests that the Huskers had on the schedule was the Michigan Wolverines, in which the Huskers lost 30-27, and the recent matchup with the USC Trojans (21-17).
When I think of Nebraska football, my mind immediately goes to the fans that support them for absolutely no reason whatsoever. I truly do commend the Huskers for what they did in the 90s. But these fans cannot keep living in the past. The Huskers have been awful at football for some time now, and they really does not seem to be trending in the right direction.
